Description
Believed to be an original cast iron fire mark possibly by the United Firemen's Insurance Assoc of Philadelphia, c.1870's-90's Era. Oval in shape with "beaded" edging, letters U and F flanking a small eagle. Approx 12" in width. Firemarks were issued by property/casualty fire insurance companies to homeowners to signify being insured against fire loss. Affixed to the homes by agents, the belief was that fire-companies would prioritize insured homes when responding to fire calls. Some surface rusting/scaling.
