Description
OUTSTANDING AMERICAN CARVED AND PAINTED BIRD TREE SCULPTURE, probably birch, featuring a hunter with his dog, six birds, three chickens, and two rabbit-like creatures on a molded platform base, retaining original surface with polychrome highlights. Possibly Northeastern. Late 19th/first quarter 20th century. 10 1/2" HOA, 13" x 9" base.
Catalogue Note: A spectacular example of American folk carving, the present bird tree sculpture is one of several known by this hand, lot 1260 in current sale being another example from this group. Given the consistent use of birch (by visual analysis) in these known sculptures, it is likely that the carver lived and worked somewhere in the northeastern United States.
