Description
A rare antique West Africa, Republic of Benin, gold patinated bronze figure of a Royal leopard for ceremonial use. The figure is adorned with detailed engraved ornaments, and a raised swirl design. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. The people of Benin, known as Bini, descended from the kingdom, also known for their impressive bronze making techniques. In Benin, bronze and ivory work has always been a royal art, created to honor the king or Oba who has reigned with his ancestors since the 15th century. The Benin people of Nigeria believe that the Benin leopard is a symbol of Justice and powerful beast, which has royal qualities. Provenance: private collection New Jersey.
