Description

A composite basket-hilted broadsword 18th century and later

The broad single fullered double edged blade, iron guard of rounded bars involving lightly fretted incised panels with circular and heart-shaped piercings, the side-panels each with 'ram's horn' terminal, and with an oval aperture for reins, fore-guards, scrolled wrist-guard, fluted conical-shaped pommel, the blade 84.5cm.

Condition

Knocks marks and scratches overall consistent with age
-blade and basket hilt would appear to be of a similar age but probably associated with each other.
-blade with edge nicks, signs of delamination, last nine inches toward tip much more pitted that the rest line visible on both sides
-slight movement between hilt and blade
-wooden grip a replacement
-pommel does not cover all of the hole in the basket hilt
-blade riveting looks a little untidy 105cm long overall.
