Description
Monumental Japanese Hirado Porcelain Vase, probably late 19th-early 20th century in date, is a finely potted example of Japanese blue and white porcelain created as early as the 17th century. This vase is boldly decorated with a landscape accented with bamboo stalks "growing" from the base to the neck of the jar painted in soft underglaze blue cobalt. Young bamboo shoots, robust in scale, are painted in brown tones and add startling contrast to the landscape. The soft hues of blue on the shoulders suggest clouds in the landscape narrative.
Dimensions: H. 18 3/4" W. 11 1/2"
Condition: Mark on side and on the neck. Shrinkage firing crack to foot and underside, otherwise it is in good condition.
