Description

An antique Japanese Satsuma porcelain vase. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Elongated shape, flared cylindrical neck, decorative ring handles with bows on the sides. The piece is richly decorated with traditional Japanese ornaments and gilding. The recto and verso sides depict scenes from a Noh theater play, two samurai in fight and a woman in kimono with two children. There is a hieroglyphical signature on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. Noh theater plays were a popular subject for Satsuma porcelain painting, a great example is Hagoromo, The Celestial Feather Mantle, one of the most-performed Japanese theatrical pieces. Collectible Oriental Asian Decor For Interior Design, Japanese Pottery.
