A Type 31/1 'Sweetheart' Clandestine Radio Receiver, English, circa 1944, serial no.17097, in grey-crackle metal casing and non-original simulated brown carrying case, no earphones, otherwise complete with battery box, receiver 5in x 4in x 1 1/2in (13cm x 10cm x 4cm) case 11 1/2 x 6 1/2 x 2in (29cm x 17cm x 5cm) Footnotes: Provenance: The John Elgar-Whinney collection of clandestine radios and cipher machines. A miniature valve-based clandestine receiver, developed in 1943 by the Norwegian Willy Simonsen, for use by the British during WWII. Approx. 50,000 units were manufactured by Hale Electric Co. Ltd in London (UK), that were dropped over occupied Europe, in particular in France and Norway. Apparently known as the 'sweetheart' in reference to a female assistant working with Simonsen on this project.
