Description
Vittorio Tessari (Italian, 1860-1940). Untitled oil on board, late 19th to early 20th century. Signed "V. Tessari" at lower left. A mesmerizing portrait of an Italian woman by Vittorio Tessari, an artist who was born in Castelfranco, Veneto and studied under Eugene de Blaas (also known as Eugene von Blass or Eugenio Blass, 1843-1932), a favorite portraitist of great Venetian aristocrats. The woman is presented bust length, gazing out with her beautiful green eyes, arched brows, aquiline nose, heart-shaped lips, rosy cheeks, and a soft fringe of curly brown hair. She is dressed in a white blouse and a black veil adorned with a floral motif of red and green hues, with a single strand of red beads (perhaps Venetian glass or coral) adorning her neck. A striking painting by Tessari, created in an academic realist style akin to that of his mentor Eugene de Blass, mounted in a stunning period frame carved with lavish floral motifs and finished in a golden hue with lovely touches of scarlet. Size (painting): 10.2" L x 7.25" W (25.9 cm x 18.4 cm) Size (frame): 15.1" L x 12.2" W (38.4 cm x 31 cm)
