Leonard E. Kesl (American, 1926-2012). Untitled black and white drawing, 1966. An intriguing drawing by Lennie Kesl depicting a nude woman sitting on a couch with a black cat between her legs, a vessel of water and a bucket of sand (both labeled as such) beside her, a bird flying toward the sun in the sky, a man in a sailboat with a raised American flag (the boat inscribed NRA 61, the sail N.R. 106) and the following inscription a the lower right, "For Jerry From Lennie - Jan. Alaska 1966". A whimsical drawing mounted behind glass in a custom frame. Size (sight view): 10.75" L x 13.25" W (27.3 cm x 33.7 cm) Size (frame): 14.625" L x 17.2" W (37.1 cm x 43.7 cm)

About the artist: Leonard (Lennie) E. Kesl was an artist as well as a professor and musician. He also served in the US Army during World War II, both as an infantryman as well as a drummer in the US Army Band. Kesl then earned his BFA from Wesleyan University (1953) and his MA from Michigan State University (1957). In addition, he studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder and L'Atelier Leger in Paris. Kesl was an accomplished painter, sculptor, printmaker and ceramicist.

Kesl's artworks have been collected by numerous elite institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City; Alaska State Museum; St. Louis Art Museum; Cincinnati Art Museum; Evansville, Illinois Art Museum; Farleigh-Dickenson University in Madison, New Jersey; University of North Carolina; University of South Dakota; Wichita State University; Colby College, Maine; American Federation of Arts Purchase; and in galleries at the University of Florida, Samuel P. Harn Museum; Santa Fe College; and Lewis and Clark College in Godfrey, Illinois.

Drawing is mounted behind glass in a custom frame. Artwork not examined outside the frame but appears to be in overall good condition save one stain at upper right of couch and slight toning. Frame has some surface wear and a few small chips at corners and peripheries but presents nicely. Suspension hardware on verso.
