Description
**First Time At Auction**

Western United States, California, Ohlone culture, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of glass beads purportedly excavated at the San Jose Mission in Northern California, and strung in modern times on a cotton thread - in hues of opaque white and red with a black core. The Spanish colonizers and priests traveled with glass beads to trade with the Native people, and the missions that were established continued distribution of beads as a medium of exchange. Size of strand doubled: 32" L (81.3 cm); beads: 0.25" L (0.6 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection; acquired from Mission San Jose restoration project
