Fidel Castro Lot of 4 Early Photos, 1959 Vintage Prints

A fantastic collection of four photographs of Fidel Castro taken shortly after the successful overthrow of the Batista regime.

1.) A 9” x 7” glossy black and white AP Wire photograph of Castro addressing a large crowd in Havana, defending executions of former Batista men. With an adhered news clipping at verso reading: "Fidel Castro, leader of Cuba's revolutionary forces, took over the reins of government in his country but showed himself capable of little but speechmaking and insults." Associated Press backstamp slightly faded and partially obscured by pasted clipping. Notations in pencil and ink at verso. Warping to upper left quadrant. Tiny tack holes at four corners. Light toning and soiling. In very good condition. With RMY Auctions Letter of Authenticity.

2.) A 10” x 8” black and white semi-gloss photograph of Castro surrounded by a large crowd and reaching his arm out towards a young woman. Notations in pencil, ink and felt tip at verso. LIFE Magazine back stamps present. Light creasing. In near fine condition.

3.) An 8” x 10” glossy black and white photograph of Castro giving a press conference in Havana on January 22, 1959. United Press International backstamp present. Notations in red ink and pencil at verso. Minor surface imperfections. In near fine condition.

4.) An 8” x 10” glossy black and white photograph of Castro seated at a press conference on January 18, 1959. The uniformed leader has his head in one hand and a cigar in the other. United Press International backstamp present. Notations in red ink at verso. Taped to verso, a yellow slip of paper with text reading: "A lung specialist examined the ailing Castro late Jan. 19th and barred all / visitors from seeing him. Castro’s secretary said he had a touch of pneumonia and was running a high fever." Surface imperfections and minor warping. In very good plus condition.

Fidel Castro (1926-2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and the head of Cuba's government until 2008. The longest-serving non-royal head of state in the 20th and 21st centuries, Castro polarized opinion throughout the world. His supporters view him as a champion of socialism and anti-imperialism whose revolutionary government advanced economic and social justice while securing Cuba's independence. Critics call him a dictator whose administration oversaw human rights abuses, the exodus of many Cubans, and the impoverishment of the country's economy.
