Description
McDermott & McGough TLS "Young men should dress like women...Women have been dressing like men for the past twenty years"
A typed letter signed by artists David McDermott and Peter McGough. 2pp, measuring 8.25" x 10.75". Brooklyn, September 10, n.y. Signed "Messers McDermott and McGough." In a letter addressed to James, the artists discuss various books and pieces of advice they'd give to young people, with a particular emphasis on the strength of women and the limitations of men. With flattened mail folds and minor soiling. Correction fluid was used at the conclusion where the men's names were typed. Boldly signed.
In part:
"…It is always such a joy to hear from young people and of course it is most flattering to be asked to share a few pearls of wisdom…Young men should refrain from any indulgence in drugs, alcohol or tobacco. These are deadly and insidious substances which do much to drain a person of vitality. Do not be lured by the herd mentality so prevalent today -- maintain a sense of dignity and withdraw from such foolish persons…Further thoughts for young women: Begin to believe that you are greater than men. Know that your bodies are capable of virgin birth. This was an ability that women had in ancient times but was gradually lost as women submitted to the domination of men. Once women reverse this situation and gain the ascendancy over men, both politically and economically, they can then consider if they wish to grant equality to men. We also have confidence in women holding power and know that they will do the right thing. Young men should dress like women and go to church every Sunday. Women have been dressing like men for the past twenty years or so and have become only stronger. If men dress as women, perhaps they will have a transforming experience and gain in strength. The men we see today are not very strong…"
David McDermott (b. 1952) and Peter McGough (b. 1958) are American artists known for their work in painting, photography, sculpture, and film. During the 1980s and 90s, they set up their own studio in New York's East Village which was lit only by candlelight to mimic mid-19th-century photography, and the duo emerged in the art world alongside contemporaries Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Jeff Koons. While their artwork uses past techniques like gum bichromate and palladium, their subjects skew more modern, covering popular culture, sexuality, fashion, and more.
