Description
No. 1999, issued for $500 to Edward Hall in 1840. Signed by Charles DeMorse as Stock Commissioner and James B. Shaw as Comptroller. Endorsed on the back by Jackson. Two allegorical vignettes. Southern Bank Note Co. Multiple cut/spindle cancels. 10 coupons attached. 7.75 x 10" DeMorse, the Texas Stock Commissioner, was tasked with funding the republic's mounting public debt under President Mirabeau B. Lamar. Shaw was made chief clerk of the Treasury Department in 1838, and in 1839 was elected comptroller, a position that he held until 1859. Shaw frequently served as acting secretary of the treasury during Sam Houston's second administration. In December 1850 Shaw was sent to Washington, D.C., to collect the $5,000,000 payment of the federal government resulting from the Compromise of 1850. Edward Hall was a cartographer. In 1836, the Texas Commissioners appointed Edward Hall to purchase and ship all supplies needed by the provincial government. Texas Ken Prag Collection
