On the Japan map, one can also see the location of the 17th-century Dutch trading post (Hirado or Firando) and Nagasaki (where our lodge was on the island of Deshima). With Van der Capellenstraat, Linschotenstraat, and Van Diemenstraat, the Netherlands is well represented in Japanese waters. The Seto-Oechi is the Japanese Inland Sea. In India, especially along the Coromandel Coast, one can observe numerous small lakes, known as 'tanks,' which are artificial reservoirs used for agriculture and fishing. British India appears complex due to the presence of many 'native states,' represented with darker colors, such as Orissa, the realm of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Mysore, Rajputana, Kashmir, Gujarat, and Bundelkhand. Overlaying this are divisions into provinces, including Bengal, Bombay, Madras, Central Provinces (not the incorrect 'Central-prov'), Northwest Provinces (from Agra to Benares), Punjab, and Assam. In China, there are no railways depicted, but a few roads are included without explanation in the legend: from Kalgan northwest of Beijing to Urga and the border towns of Maimaicheng and Kjachta, and further westward to Uliastai (Oeliassautai) in the Changai Mountains.Size: 15” x 18” inches / 39 cm x 46 cm.
