Description
**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Japan, 20th century. Six Shin Hanga color woodblock prints: (1) Kawese Hasui (1883-1957) "Morning at Ao Marsh" (2) Yoshida Horoshi (1876-1950) "Toshogu Shrine" (3) Tsuchiya Koitsu "Sunset at Tomonotsu, Inland Sea" (4) Hasui (1883-1957) "Moon over Ara River" (5) Kawase Hasui "Moonlight Night at Miyajima" and (6) Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) "Sacred Bridge". All with seals in images and inscriptions in the margins. A wonderful ensemble of Shin Hanga color woodblocks created by a new generation of Japanese artists who revived the Ukiyo-e artform with their fresh visions of Japanese subjects as seen through a modern lens. Global enthusiasm for ukiyo-e prints and Ukiyo-e's impressive impact on the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists paved the way for the Japanese Shin Hanga printmakers to revive an artform that was on the verge of disappearing by the 20th century. This new generation created woodblocks with the same integrity as the Edo masters. Size of sheets range from 15.25" L x 10.75" W (38.7 cm x 27.3 cm) 16" L x 10.75" W (40.6 cm x 27.3 cm)

Shin Hanga was an early 20th century Japanese art movement during the Taisho and Showa periods - flourishing between 1915 and 1942 - that revived traditional Ukiyo-e printmaking techniques and themes of the Edo and Meiji periods. However, Shin Hanga compositions depart somewhat from Ukiyo-e traditions by embracing the inclusion of natural light, a soft color palette, three dimensionality of the figure, as well as a sense of depth rather than flatness.

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired via descent from Isbrandtsen Family of New York City; originally acquired in Japan on a worldwide trip in 1947-48

Condition
All present with seals in the images and handwritten inscriptions in the margins. Imagery and colors are vivid - absolutely stunning. A few of the prints have minute pinholes in the margins, minor crease marks, and minute tears/losses/folds to peripheries of margins that do not impact the images. Overall very nice and the group of 6 woodblocks make for a mesmerizing ensemble.
