Edgefield District, SC, (Attributed Pottersville Manufactory, 1850s), Two Gallon Jar

brown-black alkaline ash glaze, having a slightly rounded rim over highly placed lug handles, the ovoid body has a more distinct taper than usually seen in Edgefield pots. The two slash marks below the rim indicate potter was likely an African-American.
11 1/2 x 8 in.
The Pottersville kiln site, built in 1810 by Abner Landrum, was in existence until the Civil War when it was abandoned. It was important of in the production and distribution of the alkaline glazed wares.

Condition
Glaze filled line across one handle, the opposing handle with much of the outside edge lost and separation at point of attachment; rim hairline; dents and other imperfections.
