John Barclay was an early 17th-century Scottish poet and author. His most important and well-remembered work was Argenis and was his final work he completed before he died. Argenis is a political romance novel which tells the historical story of the religious conflicts in France as well as the royalist controversy in England. The story itself is an allegorical story told from the point of view of a king.
John Barclays Argenis was first published in Elzeiver in 1627. This 1630 printing is the first edition of three issued by Elzevier in 1630. According to Willems,
“There are three editions under this date…First edition 705pp. The second, is the least beautiful and has 708pp. The third edition has 690pp” (Willems).
This beautiful printing includes an illustrated, engraved title page.
