Description
Gouache and watercolor on thick watercolor paper. Signed, lower right "M. Gonzalez Serrano". Matted and framed (no glass in place). Circa 1940.
Mexican surrealist landscape with male figures flying kites. Manuel Gonzalez Serrano was born in San Juan de los Lagos in the state of Jalisco. He moved to Mexico City and attended painting classes in La Esmeralda National School of painting and Sculpture. His first paintings date from the late 1930s. In 1944 he held his first individual show in the GalerÃa Art Decor in Mexico City. In his later years, due to serious mental health issues, he withdrew from the artistic scene and only showed occasionally in collective exhibitions. His scant production is only known by specialists but important to the history of both Surrealism and Latin American art.
