First time at auction...
West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask known as a "gle" or "ge" used during ceremonial dances by the Dan peoples. The ovoid vizard features a pair of slender eyes, a sloped nose with gently flared nostrils, and pursed lips parted in the middle, all beneath a towering forehead that bulges outwards along a central crest. The periphery is lined with several perforations for attaching to the wearer's head or a larger costume. Size: 4.5" W x 8.5" H (11.4 cm x 21.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
