Description
History of the Jews in Russia and Poland: From the Earliest Times until the Present Day by Simon Dubnow (1860-1941).
First English edition, published by the Jewish Publication Society of America, Philadelphia PA:
Volume 1 in 1916, Volume 2 in 1918, Volume 3 in 1920.
Translated from Russian by Israel Friedlaender (1876-1920).
This monumental work of Jewish history covers Jewish life in Eastern Europe from medieval origins to the year 1911. Written in reaction to the Russian pogroms of the late 19th and 20th centuries.
Simon Markovich Dubnow (1860-1941) was a Jewish-Russian historian and ideologist. He was one of the founders of the Jewish Historic-Ethnographical Society. His magnum opus is the World History of the Jewish people. In 1941, Dubnow was among thousands of Jews from Riga ghetto murdered in the Rumbula massacre.
Israel Friedlaender (1876 –1920), was a rabbi, educator, translator, and biblical scholar. Together with Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, he was a founding adviser to a lecture series that became the Young Israel movement of Modern Orthodox Judaism, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bureau of Education of the NYC Jewish community. He was on the Governing Board of the Intercollegiate Menorah Society, the Executive Committee of Bureau of Education of the N.Y.C. Jewish Community, and the Executive Committee of the American Zionists Federation. In 1920, Friedlander traveled to Poland from the American Joint Distribution Committee to distribute $35 million to starving Jews in Poland and Ukraine, but on July 5, Rabbis Friedlander and Bernard Cantor were murdered by the Red Army in Kamenetz-Podolsk, Ukraine.
