The Halutz was a global Zionist movement of Jewish youth, organized for the purpose of immigrating to the Land of Israel. It began freely organizing in the 1880s, and existed until the Holocaust. Most of the members were, until the revolution, within the Russian Empire, with the central and unifying figure of Joseph Trumpeldor.
In the Soviet Union, the training groups were forbidden from 1923, but an illegal movement operated underground. In 1925, the leaders of the organization were deported to Siberia, and by 1928 its training groups were dispersed. Most of the activists immigrated to Palestine, some as part of population exchange treaties between the British Mandate government and the Russian government. From the 1920s, the center of the Halutz was in Warsaw, Poland.
