2 Antique engravings, both marked Ant. Van Dyck Painter & Pieter Van Sompel engraver. Both depict portraits within oval arches of fruits and foliage. 1 depicting a man with the lower half of the engraving having text in Latin that possibly translates to Ferdinand. Bother of Philip IV Of Spain, Serene child, S.R.E. Cardinal & Governor Of Belgium. Other engraving depicts a woman of high status also with Latin text underneath her portrait possibly translating to Mary Queen Consort of Henry The Great and Queen of Navarre most invincible.Both engravings are floater framed within tan toned wooden frames with marquetry on corners and sides along with gold leafing on outer edges of the frames and white backboards. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.Pieter van Sompel: Born in Antwerp, Pieter van Sompel (sometimes, spelt Sompelen) came to Haarlem to study engraving techniques under Pieter Claesz Soutman. He afterwards worked almost exclusively for this master and publisher, contributing many portrait engravings to such sets as Effigies imperatorum domus Austriacae"’ (1644), Ferdinandus II et III imperatorum domus Austriacae and The Princes of Nassau (1643).Pieter van Sompel also engraved portraits and mythological and religious scenes after the designs of Rubens and Vandyck. During his career he engraved the portraits of such contemporaries as Philip of Nassau, Prince of Orange, Cardinal Ferdinand, Isabella, Infanta of Spain, Henry, Count of Nassau, and Gaston, Duke of Orleans.
