Description
Confederate Brigadier General Barnard Elliott Bee Jr. (1824-1861) Signed Document. His biographical sketch reads, "Bee is best known for the battle cry 'There stands Jackson like a stonewall!' from which Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson got his nickname. Born in Charleston, SC, Bee's family moved in 1836 to Texas where his father served as secretary of state. A graduate of West Point, Bee served in the Mexican War and advanced to the rank of captain before resigning his commission to join the fight for the Confederacy. Appointed a brigadier assigned to a command in Gen. Pierre G. T. Beauregard's Army of Virginia, Bee's men sustained the brunt of the federal assault on the Confederate left wing in the first battle of Manassas on July 20, 1861. Bee is said to have ordered his men to 'Rally behind the Virginians!' thus giving Gen. Jackson his famous sobriquet. Leading by example, Bee was constantly at the head of his brigade and fell mortally wounded just as the enemy assault began to recede. He died the next day in the small cabin near the battlefield that had been his headquarters." The signed document pertains to Bee's taxes, travel, and his health. The document measures approx. 7" X 8 1/2". The document has been professionally framed and matted. Frame measures 12 3/4" X 15 1/8". The Larry Mangus Collection, Corinth, Mississippi.
