Native American / First Nations, Canada, Ontario, Iroquois, ca. late 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood "False Face Society" mask with nickel-copper eye plates set into the visage, exaggerated grimacing features, and long horsehair. This mask was probably made by a Six Nations Iroquois artist for sale and not use, numbers are carved into side and the top has a leather loop for suspension. Traditionally similar masks were worn by members that were either initiated or those cured by a "secret" medicinal society that healed and maintained the community?s well-being. Size: 12.25" L x 8.5" W (31.1 cm x 21.6 cm)
