Description
Large group historic documents and photo album from 1898 to 1924 with almost 1100 black and white photos of the Rev. Henry A. Brown and family, who was Chaplain of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry known as the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Included is a photo of Brown with Col. Teddy Roosevelt and ex-Confederate General Joseph Wheeler (wounded 3 times and had 16 horses shot out from under him in Civil War), at this point he was a general with the US Army and an 8 term Alabama congressman after the Civil War. There is a photo of Capt. William Owen "Bucky" O'Neil on horseback who was later killed in action on San Juan Hill in Cuba. Also photos of the San Juan battlefield, many members of Brown's extended family, the Wright Airplane at Ft Myer (The first full-scale public performance of a Wright airplane in the U.S. occurred at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia in September 1908), large photo of 1918 Training School for Chaplains, & many photos of world travels including San Juan Puerto Rico, Europe, Washington DC, etc. Also many records of Clarence M. Charest around 1900 including extensive genealogical hand-written records, scrapbooks, a 1946 diary, etc. Charest was a well-known tennis champion in the Washington DC area and there are many articles about his matches. It appears Brown and Charest were related. Charest learned to play tennis left-handed when he lost his right arm in a shooting accident in 1917.)
