Description
Attributed Lee Lufkin Kaula (American, 1865-1957), Summer Landscape
oil on canvas, unsigned, unframed.
15 x 18 in.
Lee Lufkin Kaula was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. As her family was quite wealthy, Lee was able to pursue her interest and study of art. She began her training in New York with Charles Melville Dewey and later continued her studies at the Académie Colarossi in Paris.
While her early works were mostly plain air paintings and landscapes, Lee transitioned to painting portraits and other figural works after her return to the United States. She and her husband settled in Boston and were among the first tenants of the Fenway Studio building. She continued her studies with Edmund Tarbell and was highly regarded as a member of the “Boston School of Painters.”
Kaula exhibited frequently during her lifetime, including at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; the Paris Salon; the National Academy of Design, New York; the Boston Art Club and many others.
From the Estate of the late Elinor Crittenton Strobel, Davidson, North Carolina, formerly Litchfield, Connecticut
