BIOGRAPHY:
Tony Binder (1868 Vienna - 1944 Nordlingen). Studied: Academies in Vienna and Munich. Binder came in contact with the orientalist painter Camille Boiry before 1890, and in 1890 he embarked on an extended trip to Upper Egypt. In 1891 he settled in the then famous seaside resort of Cairo, Helwan. A stay in Istanbul followed in 1894, and in 1895/96 he went to Alexandria and Cairo. There were several trips to and from Egypt to Italy (including Naples, Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan) until 1901. During this time he also stayed in Munich and Vienna. There he married Mary Reiser, with whom he went to live in Alexandria, 1905/06 followed by stays in Greece, a 1911 trip to France (Marseilles, Lyon, Paris) to England (London), 1912 to Rhodes and Istanbul in 1912, and back to Luxor in 1913. At the outbreak of the first World War, he was in British internment. Then he turned first to Munich, where he and his wife ran the studio Reiser & Binder. In 1922 they settled in Dachau, Bavaria. There were short stays in Alexandria in 1923 and 1925, and later, probably 1932/33 and 1938, at the Red Sea and Suez. The Egyptian Caliph Abbas II Hilim was said to be a patron and friend of Binder and raised him to the status of a court painter. Since 1919 he was member of the Munich Artists' Association, later he was a member of the Artists Association Dachau. His numerous travels through the Middle East shaped his work considerably. Oriental interiors, scenes or landscapes were main motives of his works. He was also active as a portraitist for members of Egyptian ruling families. He also painted landscapes of his environs in Bavaria.
