BIOGRAPHY:
George Platt was born in Pennyslvania, in 1839. He was a survey artist as well as trompe l'oeil and landscape painter. In 1867, George Platt accompanied John Wesley Powell's Geological Survey and Exploration expedition that included the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Platt returned from Europe in 1874. His early education was at the University of Rochester.Following these western trips, George Platt took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy and there came under the influence of William Harnett and John Peto, trompe l'oeil painters. Platt later studied in Munich, Germany and Italy and then returned to the United States in the 1880's, going to Chicago and Rock Island, Illinois; and Davenport, Iowa.In 1881, he opened a studio in Chicago and during the 1890's, he went to Colorado where he was a teacher at the University of Denver. He did trompe paintings of western still-life subjects such as a buffalo skull, a saddle, a rifle, etc.One of his trompe l'oeil paintings was of a bowie knife that appeared to be stuck into the canvas. The bowie knife was just one element in a complex hunt scene painting that was Platt's masterpiece, Vanishing Glories, created in 1888 and exhibited at the St. Louis Exhibition.George Platt died in Denver Colorado in 1899.
