Description
South Asia/Southeast Asia, India/Burma (present day Myanmar) border, Nagaland, Sumi Naga people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A large Naga shell necklace made from thick conch (chank) shell discs with drilled suspension holes and carnelian beads threaded on the cotton cords. This was probably an heirloom piece and status symbol, shells were traded and used like currency in Nagaland. Shell necklaces were a portable way to carry / store wealth and display status. Size of strand: 25" L (63.5 cm); shells: 3.2" Diameter (8.1 cm)
