Item Details
Description
Giambologna, whose real name was Jean Boulogne (1529-1608), was a Flemish-Italian sculptor known for his remarkable skill in creating dynamic and intricate sculptures. One of his notable works is the "Medici Walking Horse," also known as the "Florentine Horse and Rider" or "Equestrian Monument of Cosimo I."The "Medici Walking Horse" is a bronze sculpture created by Giambologna between 1570 and 1580. It was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, to commemorate his achievements and celebrate the Medici family's power and influence. The sculpture depicts a powerful, muscular horse captured in mid-stride, with its front legs in the air and its hind legs extended. The horse exudes a sense of energy and movement, its mane flowing, and its tail lifted. It stands on an oval base adorned with reliefs representing military triumphs.Originally, the horse was intended to have an equestrian rider, but due to financial constraints, Giambologna left the sculpture unfinished in terms of the rider. Nevertheless, the "Medici Walking Horse" remains a masterpiece in its own right, showcasing Giambologna's skill in capturing the dynamic anatomy and naturalistic details of the horse. The sculpture is celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail, with every muscle and sinew meticulously rendered. It is considered a prime example of Mannerist sculpture, characterized by its elongated proportions, complex poses, and intricate surface textures. The "Medici Walking Horse" is housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy, where it continues to be admired for its artistic and historical significance. It stands as a testament to Giambologna's mastery of sculpture and his contributions to the Renaissance and Mannerist art movements.
