This is a Pre-Columbian Late Cupinisque grayware stippled globular body pottery vessel attributed to the Chavin culture of Peru. Dating to Circa 500-300 B.C. This lot is accompanied by a copy of the Sotheby's auction catalog entry from their sale on May 20, 1986. It was lot #1 in that sale. This item is described in a certified insurance appraisal dated November 18th 2003 by Harmer Johnson, Appraisers Association of America, prepared for Marshall and Kay J. Lee. Marshall Lee acquired the piece in a subsequent sale of Pre-Columbian art on November 20th.
From the Upstate New York estate of Marshall and Kay Lee. Marshall was a well known collector of Pre-Columbian pottery and a talented and well-respected book designer in the publishing industry.
