Description
Signed Japanese Yoshitoshi Mori Hand embellished stencil Print. Edition 9/50 with Kato framing
Signed Japanese Yoshitoshi Mori Hand embellished stencil Print. Edition 9/50

Initially, Mori trained in nihonga, a style of painting that emerged in Japan in the late 19th century as a reaction against the influence of Western art forms. It was during this early period of his artistic career that Mori cultivated an appreciation for traditional Japanese aesthetics and techniques, which would later inform his work in woodblock printing.

In the mid-1950s, Mori began to experiment with stencil dying, and by the end of that decade, he had almost entirely shifted his artistic practice to kappazuri-e, a form of stencil print. In 1959, he was accepted into the Japan Print Association, which marked the beginning of his official recognition as a print artist.

Mori's works are typically characterized by their bold, dynamic compositions, and their subjects often include traditional Japanese folk tales and kabuki scenes. These are rendered with a strong sense of color and a distinctive graphic style, often featuring a fluid, calligraphic line.

Yoshitoshi Mori's works have been exhibited internationally and are included in numerous prestigious collections, including those of the British Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Despite his late start in printmaking, Mori achieved significant recognition and contributed a unique voice to 20th-century Japanese art.

Considered to be one of Japan's finest and most innovative 20th century print makers, Mori has exhibited throughout the world and his works can be found in permanent collections of innumerable museums throughout the world including the Berlin National Museum, Metropolitan Museum, Fine Arts Museum Boston, Barcelona Arts Museum, British Museum, Japan Folk Art Museum , Brooklyn Museum, Yale University Gallery and others
