Description
Pre-Columbian, Guatemalan Mayan territories, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Size 2 1/2 inches deep by 1 ½ high. Finely carved from jade of white hues, a Mayan skull pendant closely associated with the Death God with dramatic string-cut details - those eery spiraled eyes, a straight nose with curled termini signifying flaring nostrils (nasal cavities), and an upper and lower row of large teeth. The back of the skull presents a open eyed shaman with an elaborate headdress. Biconically drilled above the headdress for attachment or suspension. Provenance: Private collection of Enrique Cardenas Olaya
