"Foreword"

From depths unknown and fathomless,
These verses came to me;
Just shells and flotsam, and some pearls
I gathered from the sea.
While some may think my treasures worth
The throwing back again,
Still there are others who may think
I salvaged not in vain.

Oliver Murray Edwards (1862-1938) was Syracuse industrialist, poet and inventor. He was the inventor and manufacturer of a number of devices which have added to the safety and comfort of railroad travel. Among them were designs for railroad car windows and extension platform doors which were used on virtually every railway line in the world. Many of his designs for railroad car window fixtures were completed in the years immediately following his school career. When he reached 30 years of age, he established a small factory on the grounds of his home, The value and practicality of his products were soon recognized in the railroad industry, and by 1906 he was prospering sufficiently to erect a large manufacturing plant.

He wrote historical and religious verse and other poetry and prose. "From Depths Unknown" is the only book he published. One of his best known poems was "Step Over the Line," a religious verse which was set to music by Prof. William Berwald of Syracuse University, and used by Gipsy Smith, the evangelist, in his revival services. The verse was written particularly for Mr. Smith, whom Mr. Edwards had met in Syracuse during evangelistic campaign here in the spring of 1922. In June, 1932, the College of Ozarks, Clarksville, Ark., recognized his work by awarding him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree.
