Description
"Our Father's House or the Unwritten Word" by Rev. Daniel March, published by Zeigler, McCurdy & Co., Philadelphia, 1869.

Provenance:
"Mary Kevan Patteson. A New Year's Gift from her Husband. 1873" is ink written on the first blank page.

Special gift edition. Heavy, embossed hard boards, leather, both boards are gold tooled [spine wear, leather aging and repairs: see photos], 5.3/4" x 9"; dark-brown colored endpapers [wear and edge damages: see photos]; frontispiece by John Sartain after painting by J.M.W. Turner, 560 pages, all page edges gilt + 10 copper engraved plates on heavy paper. Several (20+) page corner folds, some foxing, especially plates, pages next to plates and inside page corner folds; some soiling, good/ very good condition.

frontispiece and 2 plates engraved by John Sartain, 3 plates by J.R. Rice, 2 plates by Dougal, 1 plate by A.B. Walter, 2 plates by Samuel Sartain.

Illustrated compendium of religious illustrations from the "book of nature," including God's glory on the heavens, God's wonders in the deep, mountains of God, trees, the grass of the field, light, lightnings--God's messengers, little things, God's bow in the cloud, consider the lilies, the fowls of the air, God's treasuries of the wind, the rain on the mown grass, God's blessing as the dew, the river of God's pleasures, the precious things of the hills, the balancing of the clouds, God's covenant of the day and night, the time of singing, earth-teachings, the high rock, the palm tree, the cedar of Lebanon, the fading leaf, the garden of God, Man Wonderfully Made, and God all in all.

Daniel March, (1816-1909) an American Congregational minister, He attended the Millbury Academy and Amherst College (1834–36), taught for two years at the Chester, Vermont Academy, then entered Yale University, graduating in 1843. Ordained a Congregational minister in 1845, he served in Presbyterian and Congregational churches. He had an intense interest in missions, and was known for lecturing on his world travels. He has published Night Scenes in the Bible, and other works. His hymn "Hark, the voice of Jesus crying [calling]. Who will go," is given in the American Methodist Episcopal Hymnal, 1878.

Engravers of Plates:

John Sartain (1808-1897) was an English-born American artist who pioneered mezzotint engraving in the United States.

Samuel Sartain (1830-1906) American engraver, printmaker, and draughtsman.

James Riley Rice (1824-1889) American engraver, active in New York and Philadelphia.

Adam B. Walter (1820-1875), American engraver active in Philadelphia. He was a pupil of Thomas B. Welch (1814-1874) and formed a business partnership, Welch & Walter with his teacher.

William Henry Dougal (1822-1895) was an American artist and engraver. Born in New Haven, Connecticut. By 1844, he was living in Washington, D.C. and working on his own. His first important commission was to produce illustrations for the reports on the Wilkes Expedition, which made the important discovery that Antarctica is a continent and mapped many islands in the South Pacific. He went to San Francisco during the gold rush in 1849, where he operated a grocery and livery store for one year before returning to Washington. In 1850 he returned to Washington, D.C. and continued work as an engraver.
