Candid sixth-plate clear glass ambrotype of a trio of soldiers wearing the distinctive grey uniform of the early Civil War-era New York State Militia. The three dashing Yanks enjoy the high life for the camera, as two of them smoke their pipes while the third offers a toast. An interesting mix of items rest on the table between them: a cordial glass, a small revolver, a tobacco tin, and the cork from the wine bottle held by the man on the far left. Details such as these abound in this c. 1861 photograph, such as their red-tinted fez-style hats (left) and scarce early sword (right). While the group’s specific identities are not currently known, it appears that the photographer used gold gilt to highlight the brass regimental numbers on the red caps, which read “13”. This allows us to conclude that these men were a part of the 13th Regiment, New York Militia, a Brooklyn-raised unit that mustered in for three months of War service during each of the years 1861, 1862, and 1863. They also helped restore order during the New York City Draft Riots.
