Description
China Trade Black Lacquered and Inlaid Mother-of-Pearl Tea Caddy, Circa 1836. Of octagonal form, the cover painted with a landscape and curious rock, and inlaid with figures strolling beneath bamboo trees, opening to a wallpaper-lined interior, inlaid around the sides and back with delicate floral sprigs and fruiting branches, fitted with a brass bat-shaped escutcheon and bail carrying handles. H: 11 in., W: 15.375 in., D: 10.375 in. Literature: Tea caddies are discussed in Carl. L. Crossman, "The Decorative Arts of the China Trade," pp. 279-280, with a nearly identical example illustrated pl. 157.
