Description
'Nelson, Washington and Lafayette' Three Staffordshire Enamel-Decorated and Transfer-Printed Wares, 1800-30. Comprising a bust of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, 1800-10; a jug printed on each side with a portrait of Lafayette and inscribed "WELCOME LA FAYETTE THE NATIONS GUEST" beneath a copper lustre rim; a jug, Richard Hall & Sons, printed below the spout with the Great Seal and motto "REPUBLICANS ARE NOT Always UNGRATEFUL," on one side a portrait inscribed "WASHINGTON HIS COUNTRYS FATHER," and on the neck with the verse "FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE...," and on the other side a portrait inscribed "FAYETTE THE NATIONS GUEST," and on the neck the verse "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE VISIT..." Bust: H: 7.5 in., W: 4.375 in., D: 2.625 in. Second jug: 5 in., W: 4 in., D: 6.125 in.
