Item Details

Description

One of the most elusive of all 19th century needlework pieces are Watch Samplers, small, round stitched items, usually made by a wife or daughter to be kept inside the case of a gentleman’s pocket watch. They are usually between 1 ¾” and 2 ¼” in diameter and sometimes have decorations, sometimes initials and on rare occasions, a full name or motto, or a date. As you can well imagine, very few have survived. This example is stitched on very fine linen which, in turn, is attached to a red silk backing. It includes “A Present for…W B” and for embellishment, the maker included a tiny clump of flowers and a little dog (between the W and the B). It is just under 2” in diameter and the letters are stitched in a blue silk thread. There are some condition issues: there are a number of tiny holes, some of which penetrates the silk backing, there are some small areas of the linen that are missing or have worn away, and there is staining in a couple of places (fortunately, most of it is away or does not affect the stitching). This sampler is UNFRAMED, but if you have or can get a small period frame, it would look great.
