Description
Fine pair of first quarter 19th century samplers done by Ann Elizabeth Wood and Catherine D Wood. The samplers have been partially stitched together back to back apparently with the intent of making a pillow case. The front and more elaborate sampler has a vine border and depicts a house, dog and rabbit along with alphabets and a pious quote. The sampler is signed by its maker Catherine D. Wood August 1828 between the dog and rabbit figures. Sampler measures approximately 17" square. The reverse side sampler is in the show towel format measuring approximately 16 1/2" by 7 1/2" and sewn to a period course burlap measuring 17" square. This sampler has the alphabet stitched in various styles and is signed by its maker near the lower edge Ann Elizabeth Wood / Born December 21 1818. Condition - some loss in the roof area on the house on Catherine's sampler along with some wear and soil to both as shown.
