Description
'Brownies' Majolica Match Holder c. 1900 in the form of a policeman holding a large truncheon, probably Austrian, 10". Canadian Author and illustrator, Palmer Cox,created a set of characters as part of his 'Brownies' who appeared in a series of publications c.1880 based on names and elements from English traditional mythology and Scottish stories told to Cox by his grandmother. Illustrations with verse aimed at children,'The Brownies'was published in magazines and books during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Brownie characters became famous in their day, and were the first North American comic characters to be internationally merchandised. Other 'Brownie' characters were created in Majolica glazed pottery manufactured for the American market.
