George Jones Majolica Brown-Ground 'Acorn' Match Box and Cover
Circa 1875
Raised double-gourd GJ monogram, Stoke-on-Trent mark to cover interior
Oval, the top and side molded with acorn and oak leaves, within yellow rope twist rims, a match strike to the underside, width 4 1/8 inches; Together with a Minton Majolica Squirrel and Leaf Nut Dish. Partial date cypher for 1870, two small indistinct cypher, raised white registry diamond (23-H-I-6) for July 1869, parcel 6 and impressed shape no. 1522. Modeled as overlapping large green, yellow edged leaves, the handle formed as a squirrel perched on the rim eating hazelnuts, height 5 1/2 inches, length 9 inches.

Match Box and Cover: the match strike with a restored chip to the cover, light wear to the glaze on the box rim; a couple of glaze flakes on the oak leaves; examined under black light
Nut Dish: restoration to both of the squirrel's ears; some residue to the interior that appears to come off; hairline firing line to the rim in the making (approx. 1 in. on the rim; examined under black light
