Description
Hand carved and painted wood zoomorphic mask of Ngulu or pig, with metal appliques to the snout and head - with a coin mounted directly in the middle of the forehead. Textile and rattan weaves act as fur or a main around the outside of the mask. Muti-colored beads and a shell are woven into the main. Size of mask 12" L, 15" H on included custom stand.
The Chokwe animal masquerades, which date back to the colonial period, are performed to dramatize wild or untamed, foolish and absurd behaviors. Each dance ceremony is more theatrical and elaborate than the last.
Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally.
