Description

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, ca. 800 to 400 BCE. A charming pottery whistle vessel in the form of an anthropomorphic figure wearing a biconical cap that suggests he may be a shaman or ruler. The bulbous figure hunches forward with slender limbs bent before him as he gazes downward with pierced eyes and full lips. A petite ornament projects from his chest, perhaps representing a shaman's horn. A delightful example of Chorrera ceramic arts! Size: 4.8" Diameter x 6.7" H (12.2 cm x 17 cm)

Provenance: private Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA collection, via descent from a Winnipeg, Canada collection, acquired in Ecuador circa the 1960s

Condition

No longer functions as a whistle. Professionally repaired with restoration and break lines visible in areas. Some chipping to right horn, rim, and right shoulder, as well as expected nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with good remaining detail.
