Tench Coxe Autograph Letter Signed Concerning Power of Attorney
A short letter written and signed by Pennsylvania delegate Tench Coxe, 1p, measuring 8" x 10", Treasury Department, dated August 25, 1790. Addressed to an unknown recipient and signed "Tench Coxe Assist. Secy." Coxe acknowledges the receipt of a power of attorney document, writing in full: A power of attorney from Messrs Robert Elliot and Eli Williams to Otho. H. Williams & Samuel Smith Esquires, of Baltimore in Maryland, bearing date 7th June 1788, has been this day deposited in the office of the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States." With flattened mail folds and toning. With darker toning, possibly staining, at the lower edge. There is a small hole at the upper half. Large and bold signature.
Tench Coxe (1755-1824) served as a delegate for Pennsylvania at the Continental Congress from 1788 to 1789. He also was a prolific writer on the topic of political and economic subjects, as well as on naval power, the arts and manufacturing, writing under the pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian."
