Description
A monumental woodcut and screenprint in colors and mirrored collage on 3-ply Supra 100 paper titled "Imperfect" by Roy Lichtenstein. Hand signed in pencil bottom right, dated 1988, with an annotation of 23/45. Blindstamp of the printer and publisher, Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles bottom left. From the "Imperfect Print" series. Per the Art Institute of Chicago, in the subject of the Perfect/Imperfect series, the line becomes the primary structural element, forming webs of shapes filled with areas of dots, diagonal lines, and flat color. Lichtenstein followed a rule in the composition of his Perfects: "The idea is that you can start with the line anywhere, and follow the line along, and draw all the shapes in the painting and return to the beginning." Imperfect paintings are nearly identical, but where the Perfect idea celebrated boundaries, the Imperfects humorously subverted them. Lichtenstein explained, "In the Imperfect paintings, the line goes out beyond the rectangle of the painting, as though I missed the edge somehow." Accommodating this "mistake," each Imperfect includes an attached triangular protuberance that breaks the edge of the canvas. A rare opportunity to collect a unique Roy Lichtenstein composition. From a private collection; purchased direct from Phyllis Fenton, Art Dealer, Fort Worth, Texas. Dimensions: 69.5"h x 82.25"w x 2"d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. He was most famous for his comic book style and was directly influenced by popular comic strips of the time. Lichtenstein's art can be found in countless museum collections internationally and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC holds the largest repository of the artist's work. Today, his paintings reach auction records in the millions, the highest being $165 million in 2017.
