Description
A modern, native-themed, woodcut on handmade Suzuki paper titled "American Indian Theme I" by pop-artist Roy Lichtenstein. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 38/50 and dated 1980. Blindstamp of the publisher, Tyler Graphics, Ltd. As a young child growing up in Manhattan, Roy Lichtenstein visited the Natural History Museum and became fascinated with the Northwest Coast Native Americans. Lichtenstein often drew inspiration from Native American culture and was intrigued by their designs in totems, textiles, and baskets. He would re-imagine the geometric patterns in his signature pop art stylization. This woodcut is a prime example of this exploration. From a private collection. Dimensions: 35.25"h x 34.25"w x 1.5"w (framed). In very good condition. Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. He was most famous for his comic book style and was directly influenced by popular comic strips of the time. Lichtenstein's art can be found in countless museum collections internationally and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC holds the largest repository of the artist's work. Today, his paintings reach auction records in the millions, the highest being $165 million in 2017.
