Description
17th century Flemish school.
"Christ stripped of his robes".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 37 x 29 cm; 48 x 40,5 cm (frame).
This Flemish school represents a violent and narrative scene. In the foreground the Saviour is stripped of his clothes and mistreated by a group of soldiers, moments before being nailed to the Cross. The "Via Crucis" or Way of the Cross refers to the different stages and moments experienced by Jesus Christ from the moment he was apprehended until his crucifixion and burial. Theologically, it is a path of prayer, which seeks to draw the faithful into the meditation of Jesus on his way to Calvary. It is represented by a series of Passion images or "Stations", fourteen in all: Jesus is condemned to death, Jesus carries the cross, Jesus falls for the first time and is scourged by the soldiers, he meets the Virgin Mary, Simon the Cyrenian helps him carry the cross, Veronica wipes his face, the Holy Face being marked on the cloth; Jesus falls for the second time, consoles the women of Jerusalem, Jesus falls for the third time, is stripped of his clothes, is nailed to the cross, and his death on it represents the twelfth station. In the last two stations, Jesus is taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of his mother (image of the Pietà ), and finally he is buried.
