Description
Flemish school, XVII century."The Adoration of the Magi".Oil on copper adhered to board.According to the model of "The Adoration of the Magi", Museo del Prado, Peter Paul Rubens, 1609-1629.Size: 65 x 51 cm; 73,5 x 59,5 cm. (frame). In this Baroque painting of Flemish school the direct influence of the large oil painting that Rubens dedicated to the same subject, and that is conserved in the Prado Museum, can be appreciated. In composition, style and play of light, the author follows the model of the Flemish master: the architectural frame of classical inspiration frames the scene, as in Rubens' painting. As in this one, a clear night, with full moonlight, illuminates the scene and the light seems to emanate from the bodies, especially the body of Jesus, Mary and the Magi, leaving the rest of the characters in the background. Here a bright star of Bethlehem shines like a pearl in the sky. Even the gesture of the Child, playing with the offering in Gaspar's golden chalice, emulates the curious gesture of Rubens' Child. The retinue is not as numerous as that of Rubens, but each character has been treated with similar love to capture the sumptuousness of the clothes, the ornaments of rhinestones in the brocades, the rich chromatic variety and qualities of fabrics, skins and flesh tones. The monumentality of the figures, skillfully modeled with light and color, is also in the wake of Rubens. This painting is fully inscribed in the Flemish Baroque, notable in the precious attention to detail, in the handling of light contrasts and in the varied spectrum of facial expressions.
