Moving to Paris in 1899, he was in contact with the avant-gardes and in the following years he traveled to various European countries, bringing back influences from Nordic symbolism (La Primavera, Viale delle Cascine, both in Reggio nell'Emilia, Civic Museums). Author above all of portraits (Portrait of Signora M., presented at the Venice Biennale in 1905; Portrait of Giovanni Costetti, presented in Florence in 1906), in the first decades of the twentieth century he linked himself to the Roman Secession environment, often preferring the technique of monotype.
